Swimming

Good afternoon folks. I am sitting at my computer listening to Deadmau5 and thinking about what to write to you! Today I want to talk to you about swimming.
Swimming is one of the best forms of cardiovascular exercsises you can do. It is easy on your joints (much different than walking or running) and can be a logical way to increase your aerobic endurance. Some people tend to put excessive loads of stress on their joints when they decide to start training for a 10km race, 1/2 marathon or even a triathlon. However, if we simply added in an endurance swim each week instead of that extra load from a run, in the long run it may help our overall health, training and competition. An injury can set you back at least 6 weeks and injuries such as stress fractures, muscle pulls, etc can all be caused from over training. Incorporating the pool into your workout regime is something I encourage you to do if you are looking to step up your cardiovascular endurance.
So what if you do not know how to swim? Well, that is why we have lifeguards, such as myself. Find a local public pool and "get your feet wet" by swimming with a PFD (personal floatation device), or with flutter board. Find out if there are swimming lessons going on which you could sign up for or even try an aquacise class (exercise class in the pool). Being able to swim is a great asset to carry around with you in case you find yourself having to save someone in the water at some point in your life or in case you sustain a stress fracture and the only cardio activity you can do is swim.
Even if you want to swim recreationally, that also is a healthy and sustainable activity for your body. I swim and endurance distance of 32 laps each week and one day I swim recreationally with my buddy Tim. Even swimming recreationally can increase your heart rate, burn calories and make you feel better about yourself.
Now, I am not telling you to go out and pound through 32 laps in your local pool. HAHA. Remember folks; just like running, walking or weight training in order to get good at it (swimming) we must put the time in. Do not stop swimming after your first week of trying it. Stick to your guns and allow yourself to overcome discomfort and learn how to be a better swimmer.
If you are subconscious of how your body looks in a tight fitting bathing suit, not to worry! I am pretty sure that every single person in your local pool has either felt that way when they started or is still feeling that way when they come in to the pool. Buy yourself a pair of tinted goggles and you will look sharp, feel invisible and will be able to sport your body around the pool with ease in no time!

Cookies for breakfast? Is that even a question?

This seems like an obvious answer and rhetorical question right? Of course, well the answer to this question may indeed be interesting to look at. See, the other day I was cruising through the local Walmart when I came across a sale on pop tarts. HAHAHAHAHA. Pop tarts. Have you ever stood back and looked at these things and thought, "What are these things actually made of and why did I ever eat them as a kid?" When I was a kid, they were a cool thing to have for breakfast and quick and simple. However, just like the complexity of junk we have put into our foods and consequently; our bodies, so too have Pop Tarts become complex. These pop tarts were cookies and cream pop tarts and there was a picture of a cookie on the front by the actual pop tart featured in the box. I mean, do we not know what a cookie looks like? Of course we don't, so we throw a picture up on a breakfast box so that our kids know what a cookie is before they know what breakfast is. I mean, you ask any kid who was eating those for breakfast and they will probably say, "Ryan, its the cookie one." Guaranteed. You find me a kid who ate one of these who did not say that and I will give you my iPad. We have poisoned our foods by accepting dessert as breakfast. Now, lets get back to the original point..
Should our kids skip breakfast instead of having one of these cookie tart-like-junk-food-sugar filled- fat filled- boxed items? Well, as sad as I am to be saying this (I am shaking my head for any adult letting kids eat these) but a breakfast is better than no breakfast. I mean, this type of food should not even be deemed a breakfast item, but when I watch parents buy these for their kids I try to look at it more positively....I mean, at least a child is having breakfast. So many children are going to school without anything in their stomachs, which is a whole other issue. So, having something is better than nothing. However, this does not mean that these children are any better nourished than the child who had a late night snack and no breakfast before school, but at least they have some form of caloric intake to function properly in the classroom.
Seeing these items fly off the shelf reminds me just how important having and using a school breakfast program is. It is important to nourish our students and not just feed them garbage. As educators, parents, leaders and mentors the number one thing we can do for our youth is to prepare them to live in a just and moral society on their own. This starts at giving them or providing them with nutrient rich food. Not setting them up to be another health care patient statistic when they are in their late 40's.
Let's get with the program folks. Lets support breakfast programs, nourish children and not feed them boxed desserts for breakfast. Lets give them the tools they need to succeed in life at any level of school! It is our duty as physical educators!

The Super Bowl!

If anyone of you are following Scoobysworkshop.com, you will have read a blog he just wrote about exercising while everyone else were all inside watching a football playoff game last sunday. He has some great points! My blog today in looking forward to the big game is at how much alcohol is both sold and consumed during that sunday. It is staggering how many people will sit down in front of the TV all afternoon and evening on this special day in February and consume alcohol. There is something extremely unhealthy about this choice. We should not be "going all out" on this day with either food consumption or alcohol consumption. Just as we strive for balance each day, we should strive for balance on super bowl sunday.
Now, your probably thinking, "Ryan, how do I find balance on super bowl sunday? and Who cares, its the big game!" Well yes you are right, calling it a big game is an understatement. This is basically as big as the Presidential election and bigger than a gold medal hockey game. This game affects us all in some form or other. Whether we know someone is watching the game, or we are ourselves (even if it is just for the commercials), we are all someway tuned in. So, to achieve balance on this day, the difficulty remains the same as any other day. Here are some simple health and wellness tips for the Super Bowl:

1) Make your own dips! Homemade dips are always better when you can control what ingredients you put in your dip!
2) Make it social! You will probably consume less if you are with other people and you will probably feel less guilty! Emphasize that guests bring over healthy snack foods.
3) Don't buy alcohol. Instead, make a nice smoothie or a double chocolate protein shake to feel like you are treating yourself.
4) Eat whole grain crackers or pita chips. Please take my advice on this one! Regular potato chips are a no no!
5) Don't watch EVERY commercial and every play. Get up and stretch or walk around the house just to keep the metabolism up and burn a few calories about every 20-30min.
6) Workout on sunday. That's right, I know some people believe that sunday is a rest day. Well to me, any day can be your rest day, but its super bowl sunday...... So get an afternoon exercise session in!

Ultimately, I wish for you all to enjoy this game that only comes around once each year. However, just like every other important day or holiday which comes around once a year, we need to find a way to enjoy it without compromising our health. Make good choices on game day and you may end up saving yourself some money and monday morning won't be as much of a struggle as if you had overindulged in alcohol or food, or both during Super Bowl Sunday.

Warmer weather; a runner's dream.

So, here you are, reading this blog and enjoying the mild January weather. Usually, this time of year the east coast is plagued with cold weather, snow storms, etc. However, lately nature has put together a slew of mild weather. We see bare trees, bare parks, sidewalks, etc. Why does all of this matter? Well, if you kept your new years resolution this year it only gets easier from here. You have successfully made it through the 3 worst weeks of the year and now mild weather is still being forecasted. This makes for optimal running conditions (with proper outdoor gear) and leaves you with one less excuse NOT to exercise. I encourage you to take advantage of the mild weather and get out and active. Whether its walking your dog, walking to the local coffee shop, etc, just do it while the weather is good. For those of you who have unfortunately not followed through on your new year goals of pursing exercise, it is NEVER too late to hop back on the ship to the fountain of youth and incorporate outdoor exercises into your routine.
As a runner for 10 years and counting, I love taking advantage of this warm winter weather by moving my workouts outside whenever possible and by walking a bit more than I usually would. I encourage you all to do the same!

Does footwear matter at the gym?

The other day I was training in the gym while talking to my good friend and personal trainer, Alfredo. As we chatted about blogging, working out and health and wellness, he suggested I write to you folks about footwear. I thought, what a great idea! That's something I haven't thought about until he mentioned it. We must not forget our feet because all movement in and out of the gym with the exception of certain circumstances, is through use of our feet. Now, does look really matter? Should you have the fanciest converse throwbacks or should you find a pair of dusty old reeboks and throw them on even if they don't quite fit?
The answer is that neither of these are right!  Sure, we have all done it. I remember forgetting my gym shoes in the middle of the winter and borrowing a pair out of the lost and found. That's right, even trainers forget there shoes sometimes! However, if you are going to make the awesome decision to start working out or running you are in luck. With advancements in technology we now have bio mechanically sound shoes for whatever sport you wish to play or training you wish to dive in to. We have cross training shoes (for indoor, high explosive training such as interval training and compound exercises like squats). We have racket sport shoes (which I have!) that allow you to move with confidence without sliding and tearing your knee all apart. These can also be really high-tech and "breathable" with air vents for guys and gals with sweaty feet. Oh, and who can forget, those dreaded running shoes that we spent over 100 dollars on last January which have grass stains on them from cutting the grass last summer. Running shoes are derived to help your running gait. Some are wider than others and lighter than others. So have trail treads on them for cross country running, while others have track spikes on them and are feather-weight.
As you can see, there are many different types of shoes to suit any style. But you do not need to buy state of the art shoes which look super snazzy. Sometimes a $60 pair of shoes does the same job for you as a $110 dollar pair would. Also, clearance isles everywhere can have $20-$30 shoes which do the trick just fine. Ultimately, there are a few pointers I have for you for when you are shoe shopping.

1) never regret any money you spend on your feet.....As long as it is for activity or exercise purposes!
2) try them on!! I cannot stress this point enough. Try them on and make sure they fit. Sales people will stand there and pressure you and try to make the sale by telling you what you want to hear, but make sure it feels right. Sometimes blocking out the salesperson is wonderful.
3) know your feet. This probably should be first, but that's ok. It's important that we know if we have low arches, high arches, wide feet, etc. feet are like fingerprints and need to be treated with the right fit!
4) go with someone. Shop for your new workout kicks with a friend, just to get a second perspective! Finally...
5) stick to the brands you trust... I trust saucony, they make great trail and cross trainer shoes and are reasonably priced. Also, always keep the receipt, just in case.

probably the best thing since sliced bread..

Good afternoon folks! First of all I want to give a shout out to my followers in South Korea and Australia. Why do I single out these countries? Some former X grads are following me from those two countries and I am so glad to be in contact with them!
Now, I was watching an all inspiring TED http://www.ted.com/ talk in class the other talking about the company APPLE http://www.apple.com/ and how they have become so successful. Instead of giving you the 18 minute version, found below on a previous blog, I am going to sum it up and relate it to each one of you in your way. In this video, a gentleman named Simon Sinek breaks down every single business into 3 parts. Basically, picture a bagel with a small hula hoop around it. [HAHA]. from outside inwards, the three layers were WHAT we do, HOW we do it and WHY we do it was at the heart of the inner circle. Companies, celebrities, singers, politicians, teachers and mentors can easily fail at reaching success in their lives if they live life from the outside in. If they live and are defined by what they do, rather than why they do it, they will ultimately lose sight of what true success means and will not reach their potential. These people will teach for money, be politicians for self benefit and ultimately run a business that is selfish and consists of too much "taking", not enough "giving".
However, all hope is not lost. If you want to attain balance within your profession, whether it be through teaching, coaching, being a politician or a successful business owner, you need to think from the inside out. You need to be passionate about WHY you sell your product, WHY you are convinced it will help another person and have a clear purpose behind it. For example, in personal training I believe in exercise. I model it, live it, breath it, etc. but, it does not define me. I have many more things to offer but I am passionate about  my clients, their individual purposes for why they are working out and improving their health. People ask me why I would exercise on a holiday, those individuals fail to see the inverse in that they are trying to define me by WHAT I do, not WHY I do it. That is normal though, the media wants us to be people who just DO stuff. they want you to be "Who you are", but fail to dig deeper in figuring out the "WHY" in each one of us. Sounds simple eh Ryan? Well, here is another example...
I look at Steve Jobs. the accomplished CEO of Apple. He spent 3 full business days in meetings discussing the curve that the iPad 2 should have on the back. Most people in the meeting and within the company thought that was a superfluous waste of time. However, Jobs was a man who saw the "WHY" in his life and his business. WHY did he spend that much time designing the curve of the iPAD 2 just right? Because for him, he would not sleep at night knowing he settled for something that was just not right for him. He did not matter how much money and time were spent on this, everyone was in those meeting because that is WHY they were working for one of the most successful businessmen of our time. Another time, Jobs closed a whole bunch of apple stores. People were walking into the malls and could not buy apple products anymore. for 2-3 months Jobs was in intensive meetings to redesign his product stores. He did not like the previous layout of the stores and so again he did not care about time, he cared about the "WHY" in his business.
I know this is tough to follow folks, so if I could sum this speech up quickly I just want to let you know that you should not settle. Do your best to dig deeper, question things and do not let "WHAT" you do, define HOW you do it and WHY you do it. Let the WHY you do it define HOW you are going to do it and then figure out WHAT decision will help you see your results through!

Concussion overview...Are there similarities between sports?

This Hockey season have had its share there have been some interesting things to consider. There is a pandemic of concussions flooding the league and its players. this is similar to the 2001 Nascar pandemic of deaths related to the sport and it's dynamics. let me explain..
in 2000, 2001 in Nascar, Dale Earnheardt among 4 other drivers all died from crashes on race tracks. now, your reading this saying, 'Rya, where are you going with this, and how does it relate to hokcey?" hang in there!
after Dales death, engineers, doctors, owners and drivers all agreed that the sport had changed. the frames of the race cars had become increasingly firmer, meaning that cars could now reach higher speeds and crews could make adjustments easier. the drivers and tracks were the same, but this increase in speeds made the sport more dangerous. thus leading to death and a plague of injuries. immovable forces (concrete walls) were meeting irresistable cars that were extra firm, do the math/1 the energy from an impact used to be absorbed in the bending of the floppy frame. However, now that energy was being transfered through the driver of the car, thus causing catastrophic injuries, concussions and death.
now, this year in hockey more than any other, we are seeing a pandemic of concussions whereby causing players to retire early or leave them with permanent brain damage. I love hockey, I even play a bit myself on the weekends in a "weekend warrior" league. however, given my knowledge and experience accompanied by what I know of race cars, biomechanics and physics, I am going to make a startling educative assumption. Hockey, like Nascar, has become faster. the game has changed, just like Nascar changed. the problem is that superstars like Dale Earnheardt and Sidney Crosby have to become victims of the harsh realtieis of change before the league, its players and the fans accept adequetn, essential changes.
skates are now built super light and more aerodynamic allowing for you to be faster on the ice. Elbow pads and shoulder pads are also more aerodynamic and rigid allowing for more explosive movement and speeds. even hockey helmets are built really rigid and aerodynamic. Sure, when your 12, who cares? but what about when you are an NHL player? if you go sledding down a hill, you may not need a helmet, but when you drive a Nascar race car it is a different story. When you play pick up hockey, you sometimes do not condone hitting. However, when you are a professional player that is an essential and necessary part of the game. every Championship team has had its share of enforcers and guys that can throw their weight around respectively.
The problem is that again, the gear has changed. it has sped up the game and with this light-weight, rigid gear all of the energy from hitting the boards, another player or the goalpost has to go somewhere. logically, given my background in Physiology I am going to assume that excess energy is rattling the brains of players. our brains ly within a brain cavity when surraounds the brain in fluid so it can "float" within that space within our skull. all that energy from faster speeds and harder gear is allowing that organ (our brain) to shift and move abruptly within its cavity. makes sense right? Its the most logical answer I can surmise.
so, the game needs to change. whether it is to slow down our athletes, increase the ice surface area or to come out with new helmets, the NHL is obligated to change with the times. sport is dynaimc and Nascar race cars are a prime example of that. Now, I am not saying "dont play hockey". All I am saying is that you may want to play with extra caution and enroll your children in hockey with caution and further educate yourselves as parents and players on the perceived dangers with such a dynamic sport. Changes will be coming shortly within the league and will trickle down to rural leagues all over the world and I am sure that in 5 years, hockey of 2011-2012 will feel like a game that was played 20years ago. improvements will come, just as history repeats itself.

Thank you for reading:)

Hard work goes unnoticed...

You know exactly what I am talking about! Have you ever driven past a really nice estate and what is the first thing you see? You see a nice home and odds are, with a clean cut lawn. But what about the garden in the back yard, or the careful trimming of the shrubs and flowers, or the amount of hours that went in to putting up that fence just right...
Now, think about your body for one moment. Often times, we work hard, try eating right, exercising regularly, yet we do not look like the magazine covers and billboards. But I am here to tell you that good work truly goes unnoticed. See, it takes us years and years to accumulate excess fat, poor standing posture and alignment problems. Therefore, logically it will take months to years for you to reverse these changes and attain better posture, weight and body tone. We all get so caught up in short term fixes and results that we forget that hard work goes unnoticed and can take years to shape our bodies and implement healthy lifestyle changes.
Now, hard work does not go unnoticed all of the time, just the majority of the time. Eventually, someone will take a notice of your estate, your garden in the back yard and your clean, well kept property. This is true for working out and eating well. Eventually, people will tell you that you look younger, healthier, happier and so on. But do not expect this overnight just as you would not expect your house and property to look overly impressive in its first few days of work. Spend time diligently doing unnoticed work because someday it will all pay off!

When clients see results.......Awesome

That's right, it's awesome folks! Being a personal trainer is one of the best choices I have ever made in my short life. What is so great about it...well, that is obvious. When clients see results it is one of the greatest feelings in the world. No kidding folks, when someone allows you to enter their life to help them improve their game, strength, endurance or even overall health it is a huge undertaking. That's like giving your distant 16 year old cousin a new Chevy camaro [http://www.chevrolet.com] and telling them to bring it back with a full tank of gas and in good shape. There are a lot of risks involved in allowing someone else to help you in your life.
However, when that mutual relationship works out it is awesome. When a client begins to lose weight, maintain weight or Improve their lean muscle mass it is a beautiful thing. That is why I am a trainer. I love looking at my clients and seeing them more alive, vibrant and ecstatic about their new life changes. whether you see them performing better on the court or running a faster time in their road race, the results of good training, adequate nutrition a properly aligned wellness wheel can do wondrous things. It can leap you Over new boundaries which you thought you would never hurdle over. It can throw you into a new realm of confidence and make you know yourself better than you ever thought you would.
See folks, you can see why I love personal training. Yes there are always times when we plateau or may not quite see the results we may expect or initially read in mens health but at the end of the day it all seems to work out if you can find a good trainer to help bring about adequate results. I think it is also important to note the catastrophic responsibility a personal trainer possesses. They can dangerously mislead a client and give them falsified information. Or, they can bring you to new heights and allow you to stand on your mountain top with confidence and of course, a properly poised posture!
I encourage all of you to look into finding an affordable, reputable trainer. Or at least start working out on your own. The body is a remarkable machine which can be fine tuned with proper nutrition planning and training. We can not all afford a trainer, and that's ok. But promise me that at least you will find a friend who is a trainer and tap into them as a resource. Chances are, they will learn as much from you as you will from them!

The iPad shout out

Well folks, today's blog is going to be a little different. This blog today is on the iPad and what it can do for you. See, purchasing this iPad was a huge risk at the time, but now it is paying off. When I took a trip to Maine I decided to purchase the iPad based on three trips in and out of the apple store and my prior knowledge of the apple software and product. I sit here today telling you that if you have the funds, invest in the iPad 2. That is what I bought. You can be anywhere, doing anything from teaching, coaching, and calendar planning to looking at the weather, listening to music while in the shower.....you get the picture hahah! There is so much this product can offer you which no other product can. It has a camera, video recorder, notepad, newsstand, e-bookshelf, etc and can be used as a compass, gps, thermometer, alarm clock, mp3 player, movie player, day planner, etc. I think you can grasp the capacity this product has to offer. Since purchasing this iPad it has made my crazy, hectic life less crazy and has made me more efficient with my time! The iPad2 can do the same for you! http://www.apple.com/

Loyalty and trustworthiness...What's the difference?

The other day I had a great discussion about something that had happened in one of my buddy's lives where he was very thankful to have a loyal friend to help him get through his situation.
In the days since, it seems as though I cannot get these two words out of my mind. Loyalty and trustworthiness....what do they mean? Well, in short a person who is trustworthy is a person who will take what you say and basically keep it confidential. They will not tell anyone what you have told them and you know their word is good. A person who is loyal or a loyal friend is someone who will stand beside you no matter what that word is.  For example, if your friend does something which you do not approve of, if you are loyal to that friend you will tell them that you do not approve but you will also stand right beside them as they live through the consequences. For example, say your friend tells you something and tells you to keep a secret. If your trustworthy you will keep it, but you may shun this friend as you do not agree with what they said. However, if you are a loyal and trustworthy friend you will stand beside your friend even if you don't like what they told you.
This is a more philosophical blog looking at the unique differences between these two concepts. I think it is very important to understand these two concepts and apply them in certain situations. Next time your friend or family member does something you do not agree with, tell them! But stand beside them as they deal with the consequences. For in the words of Maximus Orillius from Gladiator, "what we do in this life, echos in eternity".

Uncommon

This year for Christmas I was gifted three books and a gift card to a bookstore. What an amazing bunch of gift givers I have in my life!:) One of the books I received was titled, "Uncommon", written by former Indianapolis Colts Football coach Tony Dungy. I have read Tony's material before, but this book is up there with his "Mentor Leader". In this book he talks a lot about the power of influence, the role of integrity and the absence of integrity (Penn State?) and how it is now "uncommon" to find good men who can foster healthy marriages, family life, coaching careers, teaching careers and still keep grounded in his faith. Wow, what a mouthful of stuff eh? That is a lot to take in! Well, it is, but it isn't. See Dungy writes in such a way that he ignites past experiences in our lives where people have had good influences and bad influences on us. He breaks down his explanations by providing examples of key football players throughout his life who demonstrated good character, integrity and a humanistic approach to others.
As a Phys Ed teacher, Dungy hits the nail on the head in chapter 11 when he states this,
"Teachers are mentors everyday. There are plenty of other vocations that teachers could pursue, jobs that would pay them more money and cause them less stress. But they choose to give up material things in order to build into the lives of young people. They choose to mentor. They leave a legacy".
I may be taking this quote a bit out of context, but I firmly believe that this should be one of the goals we all pursue together, not just as teachers. As teachers, yes we choose to mentor, but you can do the same thing! There is not card you have to carry around in your wallet which spells out your name, level of integrity and level of mentor. It is not tangible and is something which we can all do.
My challenge for each of you today is simple. Be a mentor for someone in need. do something nice for someone who needs it. Call up an old friend and ask how they are doing. Simply be interested in someone else's needs. There is a short story about a boy who had terminal cancer and everyday his mother wrote a small letter to him and put it in the mailbox. The boy would open each new letter everyday with a smile. While the boy lasted longer than he should have, one of his last words to his mother was, "Mom, thanks for all the letters, I knew it was you all along, I was so happy because just wanted someone to care." Be a mentor. Be educated!Be uncommon.

Gym courtesy

So today I was training a client and to put it nicely, the gym sounded like the 4th of July. But since we are in Canada, let's say the 1st of July.  A random person was doing Romanian dead lifts, which in laymans terms is an exercise you would do to appropriately pick something heavy up. In doing so, this person proceeded to slam down their weights repeatedly for each rep of each set. Just picture the sound of about 230lb colliding on a floor over and over again for let's say, 24 times. Anyways, my whole point here is that it was loud, freakishly loud. Now, why would I blog about this? Good question!
Courtesy, something which many young men are not accustomed to and something which many of us overlook at times. A simple act of courtesy can go a long way! If you want to know the true definition of courtesy, just use your common sense. At least, that what I do..
See, in allowing the weight to drop at the speed to create that much force/noise this person was not fully getting their reps done properly. This person was not only shifting all he gym attention to himself, disrupting other's workouts, but they are also cheating themselves of a good exercise. Now, this could lead to chronic back problems down the road or even a torn muscle.
We all can agree that courtesy is especially critical this time of year when maybe "new" people are trying out the gym for the first time in their lives or returning after some time off. These individuals need a stress free environment, not one full of shattering noise and a lack of courtesy. So, next time you are at the gym and you see or hear someone slamming the weights around, go up and speak your mind. Tell them they are being superfluous ly loud and that it is distracting you. It doesn't matter how big or small this man or woman is, the important thing is that they be reminded of good manners and courtesy.
We only have so much space at the gym folks, so share it with others in a friendly, welcoming, low noise kind of way. If that happens, we can all maximize our workouts and all reach our goals together without unnecessary injury or interference.

The Quispamsis Goodlife

Say that 10 times fast. That's right, Quispamsis is a place located in the back woods of southern New Brunswick within throwing distance of the Irving Codfathers and local entrepreneurs. My visits there are very welcoming and enjoyable. One of my favorite things to do, wherever I travel, is to workout. So logically, when I travel to Quispamsis, that is one thing I do.
In this village there is a very classy Goodlife gym . It is spaceous, welcoming, laid back and home grown. It is large enough that if you wanted to avoid someone you could and if you wanted to see someone they are within walking recovery distance. It is equipped with a huge spin room, aerobics studio and enough cardio equipment to sink a ship! Even at its busiest hour there is no fighting for your treadmills and upright bikes.
Let's not forget about post workout nutrition......Not to worry at this Goodlife! It is sandwiched between a Shoppers Drug Mart and a fancy pizza/sub shop, everything you need within walking distance!
While I was there I was able to do straight leg dead lifts while glancing out into the back woods of New Brunswick. I also got some amazing cardio in while catching up with some former X graduates, again, making this gym more welcoming. Also, the locker rooms were safe, clean and again very large for us men. See, we need lots of room to move our big egos around after a sick chest pump, and that gym has that space for us to do that.
I guess if I could describe it as simply and easily as possible I would have to say that this gym was the Starbucks of gyms, it was your north star in the night. This gym has it all folks! I encourage you all to hop on the Goodlife train when you are in or near Quispamsis. While you are there, tell the generous people at the front desk that you read about how good this gym was on Ryan's blog. I may always have trouble spelling or saying Quispamsis. But I will never have trouble working out in that place.

3rd annual Christmas Eve run

The snowflakes were falling over the countryside and the bitter wind was in my face but that didn t deter my enthusiasm as I had my brother in law along side. That's right, it was that epic! The 3rd annual Christmas Eve run! For 3 years I made the decision to partake in a run during the holiday season. See, people think "Ryan why would you workout on a holiday, especially Christmas eve?" my answer, "if I love doing what I do, why wouldn't I do it over the holidays?" with that attitude in mind, I feel that we all need to approach physical activity with that attitude, especially in January. See, now that the holidays are over most people have that shift in attitude and do not always love the joys that come with physical activity. We all get caught up in doing what we "have" to do, instead of what we "want" to do in terms of physical activity. Just like my attitude towards the Christmas Eve run, we all need to find a way to enjoy physical activity more during the long winter months. Find a friend, go for a walk, take the dog out. Whatever you can do to increase the fun factor, do it!
